There are several benefits of using terracotta self-watering spikes for container or garden irrigation. Here is a list of a few of them:
- Terracotta plant watering spikes can help you to reduce water loss in your garden by watering beneath the surface of the soil. Less water is lost through evaporation.
- A reservoir of water is used to reduce watering frequency. See: Note: How Do Terracotta Self-Watering Spikes Work?
- You can control the amount of water you use to water your plants. The amount of water you use is defined by the reservoir size and frequency of refills. This will help you to conserve water.
- The roots of your plants latch onto the clay watering spike taking in the water they need as they need it. Making it hard to over or under-watering. See: Note: Example of Roots Attaching to Terracotta Watering Spikes
- Watering spikes reduce soil erosion and runoff.
- Plant disease, such as powdery mildew, is reduced by not wetting the leaves of your plants.
- Watering spikes can reduce weed growth by only watering the area around your plants not across open surfaces of your garden.
- Helps to prevent root rot by not oversaturating the soil around your plants.
Note: Many of the benefits of terracotta watering spikes are similar to that of olla clay pot irrigation. Here are some of my 2022 results with both ollas and terracotta watering spikes.
